Florida's climate is tough on HVAC filters. High humidity, year-round pollen, and near-constant system runtime mean that the "replace every 90 days" advice on most filter boxes simply doesn't apply here.
The Central Florida Rule of Thumb
For most Orlando-area homes, replace your 1-inch filter every 30β45 days. Thicker media filters (4β5 inch) can go 6β12 months, but only if installed correctly and checked monthly.
Factors That Shorten Filter Life
- **Pets:** Dander and hair load filters within weeks. If you have pets, check every 2β3 weeks.
- **Allergies or asthma:** Use a MERV 11β13 filter and replace every 20β30 days.
- **Dusty renovation work:** Replace immediately after any sanding or drywall work.
- **High occupancy:** More people = more skin cells, clothing fibers, and tracked-in dirt.
What Happens If You Wait Too Long?
A clogged filter restricts airflow across the evaporator coil. The coil gets too cold, ice forms, and your AC either freezes up completely or blows warm air. In the worst case, the compressor overheats trying to compensate β a $1,000β$3,000 repair that a $5 filter would have prevented.
How to Check Without Pulling It Out
Hold a flashlight up to the filter slot. If you can't see light through the filter, it needs to go. Simple.
Our Recommendation
Set a phone reminder for the 1st of each month. Pull the filter, hold it up to a light, and replace if it's more than 30β40% grey. The cost is trivial compared to an AC repair call in July.
