In Florida, a failed AC isn't just uncomfortable β it's a health risk. The good news: most AC failures give you warning signs days or weeks before complete shutdown.
1. Warm Air From the Vents
If your AC is running but blowing air that's only slightly cooler than room temperature, the most common culprits are low refrigerant (leak), a dirty condenser coil, or a failing compressor. Don't ignore this β refrigerant leaks worsen over time.
2. Ice on the Refrigerant Lines
Ice looks harmless but it means your system is starved of airflow or refrigerant. Turn the unit off immediately and call us β running an iced-up system can burn out the compressor.
3. Short Cycling
If your AC turns on, runs for 2β3 minutes, shuts off, and repeats β that's short cycling. It wastes energy, adds enormous wear to the compressor, and usually means a refrigerant problem, dirty coil, or oversized unit.
4. Unusual Noises
- **Banging or clanking:** Loose or broken component inside the unit
- **Squealing:** Worn belt (older units) or bad motor bearings
- **Clicking at startup/shutdown:** Usually normal; constant clicking is not
5. High Humidity Indoors
Your AC dehumidifies as it cools. If the house feels sticky even when the AC is running and hitting setpoint, the evaporator coil may be dirty or the system may be oversized.
6. Water Leaking Indoors
A small amount of condensate is normal. Puddles under your air handler mean a clogged condensate drain β which, if ignored, leads to water damage and mold.
7. Spike in Electric Bill
A sudden 20%+ increase in your power bill with no change in usage habits often means your system is working harder than it should β dirty coils, low refrigerant, or a failing capacitor.
Bottom line: If you notice any of these, get it looked at before summer peak. A $150 service call now beats a $2,000 emergency repair in August.
